"Instilling Fear"

WHAT IS TERRORISM?

Although terrorism seems to be a new term placed into our everyday language, the word and acts of terrorism have been around since the recording of history. It has been defined as a strategy or tactic used for a “holy duty”; most terrorists feel that it is a justified reaction to oppression and disgrace. Because terrorism has a secretive nature and the terrorists groups are small in size; there is no clear organization to defend ones self against. The United States Department of Defense defines terrorism as the calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological. Most terrorists feel that their actions are justifiable due to their “heroic” nature. Terrorists will use any means possible to get their message across.

Terrorism is a planned and well organized action that is intended to achieve particular goals. Many people try to understand why theses terrorists choose such brutal and vicious means to display their message. However, the motives of these terrorists differ greatly for each individual. Some may partake in these evil actions for political recognition or a greater bump in their political standing. Others may have a quest for media exploitation, if they contribute to these awful acts then their ideas and religious beliefs may be spread. Any media outlet that will get their message across is what the terrorists hope for. Terrorism is not a random act. A Terrorists victim is not the victim of the violent act; but rather the emotional damage that is caused by the repercussions of their actions. Their goal is to induce an emotional response, to devastate the remaining nation or family members.

September 11th, 2001 was the first time I had ever experienced an act of terror; the devastation and horror that occurred that day and months to follow will forever replay in my mind. If a terrorist’s motivation is to leave a lasting impression in our minds then they have done so successfully, because I will never forget the thousands of men and women who have died for our country to keep our nation free.
